Inspired by the popular comic book series produced by Top Cow Productions, Inc., The Darkness II is an intense first person shooter that delivers a twisted and gripping narrative of tragedy, modern crime drama, and supernatural horror. We’ll find out for sure when it releases later this year.The Darkness II is the sequel to the critically acclaimed 2007 release The Darkness. The question I have is, will it be able to recreate those surprisingly tender moments from the first one like watching To Kill a Mockingbird with Jenny before her death? If so, I’ll definitely be picking it up. The Darkness II looks to be a promising sequel with great action, expanding on the original in every way. Jackie wakes up in an asylum with a doctor explaining he had another one of his ‘episodes.’ The Darkness II demo comes to its conclusion when floodlights cripple Jackie and Victor mockingly towers over him as he fades into unconsciousness. Four appendages with which to deal death should be entertaining -Ī single mischievous Darkling acts as companion, popping up time to time, helping you out near the end of the demo by driving an oil tank into a sealed gate to blast it open. Finally, the ‘black hole’ was also showcased and, as implied by the name, opens up a vortex that swallows all enemies in the vicinity. Taking a spot outside, players can make mincemeat of his unsuspecting foes.

XBOX 360 THE DARKNESS II UPGRADE
A further upgrade called the Heart of Darkness allows Jackie to shoot through walls, an indispensable ability when players come across a building with a dozen enemies hiding within. Gun channeling powers the Darkness guns, increasing their strength and speed. There’s several different options, but for the demo, Carter focused on gun channeling. This lets player upgrade and customize abilities. To help Jackie, you can garner essence that acts as experience points. There’s legions of enemies to face in the stage, including a special type that slashes a whip and strips you of your guns.
They’re also helpful in taking environmental objects and making them into weapons, hurling car doors and poles to perforate foes. The Darkness tentacles devour hearts, rip out spines, and decimate foes. The Darkness II is not for the squeamish. The Darkness squeals and retreats, and you have to knock out the highbeams or take cover. In one sequence, they roll in on a vehicle with the headlights acting as a paralyzing flood. The Brotherhood is aware of this fact and uses it to debilitate Jackie whenever they can. That means four weapons are at your service as long as light doesn’t enter the equation - brightness scares the Darkness. Quad-wielding is at the center of the action in The Darkness II, Jackie having the use of dual weapons and the two Darkness limbs that ravage, devour, and protect. The Brotherhood is entrenched there, ready to do whatever they can to strip Jackie of his powers. The demo begins with Jackie following Victor into an abandoned carnival. When the Brotherhood tries to torture him into relinquishing the Darkness, Jackie unleashes his malevolent tendrils on his inquisitors, dispatching them in violent fashion. Unfortunately for Jackie, time hasn’t healed any wounds, and he’s still haunted by the specter of Jenny. The Darkness ended up corrupting them instead and now, they’re obsessed with regaining its power. They know about the Darkness, having tried to control it centuries ago in an attempt to vanquish it. There’s a new villain this time around, Victor Valente, head of the enigmatic Brotherhood. The Brotherhood will have a tough time harvesting the Darkness from Jackie & Co. The world definitely has a graphic novel aesthetic that’s both atmospheric and visually stirring. The first thing he noted was the team’s admiration for Top Cow comics and their desire to mimic the visual style of the comic book The Darkness II is based on. Things haven’t gotten better in the sequel, The Darkness II, a first person-shooter developed by Digital Extremes, published by 2K Games, and being released on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.ĭigital Extremes Project Director Sheldon Carter gave us a playthrough with commentary describing what was new to the game. The first game was a brutal tribulation for our hero, a mafia assassin who’d inherited the Darkness through his family line. As if that weren’t enough, Jackie, in desperation, pulled the trigger on himself. The mob killed Jackie Estacado’s girlfriend, Jenny, right in front of his eyes.
